I've been thinking a lot about style, lately.
Not necessarily fashion style - as a creative person, my 'style' is more the general aesthetic vision I'm putting out there - or, rather, striving toward having to define for myself, these days.
Style is very very definitive and personal - and it's hard to find yours, sometimes. You truly have talent if you can take your insides and manifest it as what you envision on the outside! Trust me: I'm 28 and I feel like I should know what mine is, already - and be able to execute it well...lol - but I'm still struggling with that: both fashion and, now, graphics-wise. You know like when you sit down to draw something and it ends up looking nothing like what you had in mind? Or when the yellow wall you painted looked way cooler in your head with all the stuff in the room? Like that. Sometimes it looks close to what you thought and other times it's waaaay off = frustration.
How do I combine my love of crazy, kitschy colorful things and that brooding, black leather aesthetic I love so? Or the clean hipster design style I'm crushin' on? So complex!
I know what kinds of visual things I love in multiple areas, but - as a student, and someone who's never really had time/had to sit down and really really try to define this for myself - I find it very hard to connect what I'm envisioning with what I actually have going on. lol. It takes work!
Is style maybe so hard to pin-point because it evolves so much?
At the same time as I'm grasping to figure it out for myself, I hope that I never have it "figured out" - because that's not really possible, I think. We change so much, aesthetically: I don't think you can pick one thing and keep loving exactly that for 40 years, right?
But that's what makes it so hard to get a hold of, that always-moving.
School is very big on documenting the process of everything (which I love to bits!), and I've discovered over the last year and a half just how much of a visual thinker I actually am: I can have lots of ideas and think I'm pulling them together, but my brain doesn't actually compute and combine how I'm trying to mix inspirations & ideas in these things unless I see them, gathered.
I feel very inspired seeing everything I've gathered in one place - I can see patterns and pick out what I'm most drawn to/colors I keep choosing all in one place! It's amazing. I find myself making little albums for every school project I have, now, too, for inspiration's sake. For the last year and some, it's kind of helped out a lot in the style area.
Do you pin? Have you thought of it as a tool for defining your style, before?
Have any favorite pinners you'd suggest?
