Unrelated, but funny: I sing the 'name game/banana song' all the time, around here, cuz it randomly pops into my head and hubby's name is Tzanko, which is pretty funny to rhyme with made up words! lol. Name game, anybody?
Did you know I'm working on a big ol granny square blanket?
Perhaps I've mentioned it.
I actually feel really funny posting about these granny squares of mine finally because they've been a work in progress since - January? I'm not even sure! At the beginning of the year, my crafty goals included two big make-it-for-sure projects: 1. Make a quilt (started, check!), and 2. Make a big ol granny square blanket for my home. So, here's the blanket, in action!
Which pattern am I using?
This lovely free Circle Granny pattern from Yvestown!
Last year, when I learned how to crochet a granny square, I quickly fell in love with this circle granny pattern (which I found via Tif/Dottie Angel). It was a wee bit more challenging, and I liked the way it was typical, but not. There's something special about it! I learned it as soon as I'd aced the usual square.
Here's my progress, so far!
I have been working with a bunch of random but-coordinating bright colors, assembly-line style - meaning, I do all the middle circles (the first row of the pattern) before moving onto the next row. Here are the first rows:
I find this method a lot quicker than doing each square one by one, because I learn the first row of by heart and can quickly zip through a bunch of them without glancing down at the pattern every few stitches.
I then did the same for the next two rows, and now they sit overflowing & pretty on a big tray in my living room, awaiting the final square row of white/cream:
It's a big undertaking, making a queen size granny blankie! I think I calculated that 180 squares need to be made, and each have 4 colors (which means 8 strings to tuck in at the end - agh!).
I'm doing it in coordinating, bright, little-bit-crazy random colors (lol - my favorite! See above), but grounding it all with a white or cream outer row on each square. So far, I have all 180 circle colorful 'middles' done (yay!) - I have to do the make-it-into-a-square white borders on each, still, and then join them together into one big blankie!
It's to go in the bedroom with the crazy quilt, eventually.
Double-crazy, you say? That's my forte. :)
Some of the yarn & colors I've used, so far:
Debbie Stoller - Bamboo Ewe in Beach Glass, Snapdragon, Periwinkle & Mermaid. Vanna's Choice in Mustard, Fern, Terracota, Aqua & Sapphire. I have a lighter orange, light & dark purples and greens, and a few other colors in there (mostly thrifted), but these are the bulk of what's shown above (& mostly my favorites)!
And that's the start of my granny lovely! :)
Lots more to come, over the next few months on this guy.
Just, you know, thought you might like to know what I've done if you're thinking of making/are open to be inspired to make your own granny blankie!
Let me know if you have any questions, of course!
