Hello, my handmade fox costume. :)
Just for Halloween, on Friday night I rushed home to start a-sewing my Halloween costume (nothing like the last minute, right?) - and I thought it would take a few hours to make a body + tail + ears + a mask, but - silly me - I ended up sewing it until mid Saturday and had just enough time to fluff up the hair, hop into it, and run outside with mister husband to take pictures before we lost our light (hating that it gets dark at like 5:30, now! agh!).
So, whew! It's been a while since I've stitched something wearable, I forgot how long it can take! lol. I even kept it pretty simple, I think. And, thus the somewhat blurry photos - us + new camera + waning light = blurry. Artsy, shall we say?
I was just a plain fox, though the animation crowd at the party we went to thought I was either Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog (whom I forgot had existed, plus I only had one tail) - I even got a Mozilla Firefox guess. lol.
Uh, no - just a fox, thank you. :)
I made it for about $15, total - I thrifted a pillowcase for a few bucks & got some orange and white fleece (about 1 metre of the orange and a half metre of white) for half price, and had some black felt scraps + yarn laying around. I choose to use fleece because you can cut it and it doesn't fray - yay!
I used the pillowcase as a pattern for the orange fleece body, and layered some jagged-edged pieces at the bottom to mimic fur. I attached the tail (which I drew, stitched, and stuffed) to a long strip of vintage sheet - enough to wrap it around myself twice and hold the tail up/also act to break up the horribly unflattering pillowcase shape...lol. I made the ears out of felt and hot glue-gunned them onto the headband, and voila! Easy peasy. Thank goodness for the pillowcase as a base, it really sped things up. :)
I had lots of fun with the little details, like the ears & mask:
Then, off to the party we ran!
Mister husband was Wolverine this year, a top choice since his hair grows the same way and he looks a little Wolverine-ish, anyway - plus, he's his fave! :) He was in character all night:
We were searching and searching to no avail for yellow tights, but ended up just ripping the sleeves off of a thrifted shirt and sewing on the felt panels to look like Mr. Wolverine's superhero suit - thank goodness we found the claws, too! :)
A few sillies from behind the scenes:
We had a blast, this hallows eve. :) (the actual party pictures are pretty much drunken laughing & falling down, so we'll leave that to the imagination...lol - though there was a wolverine showdown when a second one showed up). Usually we're pretty chill on Halloween, but it was fun to overdose on Tootsie Rolls and stay out til 4 in the morning, for a change. lol.
Most of all, I was totally proud that I took a moment to actually make my costume, since last years' feels like kind of a thrift shop cop-out, now. :)
What were you for Halloween?
I hope you had fun, wherever the night took you!
