So, Sushi. I have a love/hate relationship with Sushi.

You see, I never had it until, well - last year. The small town I grew up in, Penticton, and then the place I lived in Calgary, had little to no (none, that I can recall) sushi places. It didn't really ever cross my mind until I moved to Vancouver a few years ago (where it's every second place to eat!).
But, still. Due to a major lack of enjoyment of seafood on my part (read: I think it's gross! The texture, the smell, the mercury floating around in it!), I didn't try it for the longest time. It's just not a delight, for me.

Hubby, however, loves it. He was going into withdrawals from not having it, since it was a diet staple of his when he lived in New York. So last year I started to go with him on the rare occasion, to be nice and fair. lol. We went a few rare times over that year, at first. I couldn't use chopsticks, so I attempted it with a fork. I also had no idea that there was veggie sushi until that first time, nor where to pour the soy sauce and what the heck wasabi was (I mean, I'd seen them snort it on Jackass, so I knew it was spicy...lol...but that was about it). It's truly like a whole nother world of food, at first, no?
Well, recently, for the last month or so - after the cleanse, especially - we went on somewhat of a sushi binge and I was actually craving it a lot. So we had it, a lot, to hubby's happy surprise. :) And it's growing on me, I have to say. I actually suggest sushi dates, now.
We went on one last night, in fact - thus, this post. (Oddly enough, it was totally not the best sushi we've had! ha ha.) And the badly wrapped roll I got made my newly acquired chopstick skills look sub-par (last weekend I actually finally used chopsticks to eat an entire meal - of rice, no less! - after resorting to finger-sushi-eating for a phase, there). lol.
I love the many veggie options that (usually) exist here in this city. And I occasionally try one of hubby's ordered crazy fish sushi concoctions, too.
I do, however, still have one big complex. And it is that most every place we go to, the sushi is the one-bite size equivalent to that of a 7-foot tall man. I usually can't get over that I'm supposed to fit this giant, super-sized roll in my mouth at one time (politely!) and then somehow have room to chew it, too. lol. Maybe it's just some sushi places? The 'special' veggie rolls? But it seems like everywhere we go, they're super-huge (like, the size of your fist!).
That is my only qualm about sushi, now. Therefore, I've decided I'm going to make my own. And they will be small and full of veggie goodness and beautiful and easy (dainty, even?) to eat. :) It'll happen. I'll keep you updated.

I dream of making an avocado, yam & asparagus roll with sesame seeds on top.
And if that doesn't work, I'll just get/admire/oogle these, instead:
Sushi - love it? Hate it? Never tried it? Made it?
Share your thoughts/recipes/tips/veggie suggestions, please-oh-please!I still have soooo much to learn about it! :)
As for me - day off today! Breakfast, thrifting, errands, finishing up some design/illustration concepts, scrapbooking, and hopefully more crafty updating here today! :) More soon!
